Developing Basic Skills for Youth in Train & Earn Programs
Description: Congratulations, your program has recruited, registered, and completed the intake process with your young people. Increasing their basic academic skills will greatly benefit them as they pursue developing their occupational skills. There are some programmatic best practices that will lead to accomplishing this goal. In this first session, we will discuss strategies for increasing youths’ numeracy and literacy skills in workforce development programs. Date: Friday,October 18, 2019 Time: 10:00am-1:00pm Location: 85 Broad Street New York, NY Room 27B
Uncover and Plan: Being Intentional about Academics in Workforce Development
Description: Research indicates that blending and integrating academic content with workforce development is a successful method for providing youth with 21st century skills. However, identifying the math content knowledge that can be gained from completing a resume writing activity may not always be clear; or planning to use drafting a cover letter activity to teach developing a topic sentence and effective supporting details may be just as challenging. In this second session, we will look at how to find numeracy and literacy content in occupational skills and how to lesson plan workforce development activities with academic growth in mind. Date: Friday, November 1, 2019 Time: 10:00am-1:00pm Location: 85 Broad Street New York, NY Room 27B
Using Academics to Develop Employability Skills
Description: Employability skills are vital to the success of our youth, but they are often taught in the vacuum of workforce development. Likewise academics tend to be relegated to their own section of some programs. What would happen if we used academic development to grow our youths’ employability skills? In this final session, we will dissect how best practices for teaching and learning numeracy and literacy can simultaneously develop the 9 Employability Skills in your youth. Date: Friday, December 13, 2019 Time: 10:00am-1:00pm Location: 85 Broad Street New York, NY Room 27B
Follow up coaching for programs is available and highly encouraged for optimal development of the skills learned in the cohort sessions.
